Playing in the Garage
Sometimes, the best photoshoots happen when you least expect them. The other night, I found myself in the garage with my son, a flashlight, and my camera—and we decided to experiment. He just turned 18, and as a mom and a photographer, I know how fleeting time feels. Capturing these moments, even the silly, spur-of-the-moment ones, feels more important than ever.
Our “studio” setup was anything but fancy: concrete floors, a flashlight we found in a drawer, and my camera on hand. But that was part of the fun. We played with light trails, shadows, and poses—sometimes serious, sometimes goofy. My son, with his newfound “adult” status, managed to switch effortlessly between pretending to be too cool for this and genuinely having a great time.
What started as a casual experiment turned into a collection of creative, quirky shots that perfectly captured this moment in his life: on the cusp of adulthood but still playful and full of curiosity. The garage became a canvas, the flashlight our paintbrush, and the memories we made—well, those are priceless.
For me, photography isn’t just about polished, picture-perfect moments. It’s about the in-between times—the laughter, the creativity, and the connection. And as my son continues to grow, these little snapshots remind me how special it is to pause and soak in the now.
So, if you ever find yourself with a camera, a light source, and someone you love, don’t overthink it—get creative and have some fun. You might just make a masterpiece... or at least a memory.
